Why don't native Chinese speakers say \"Nǐ hǎo ma?\"

Stop saying "Nǐ hǎo ma?": 10 real Chinese greetings.

Stop Asking "Nǐ hǎo ma?" Textbooks teach it, but locals don't use it. Here is the real way to catch up in Mandarin.

1. 你吃了吗? (Nǐ chī le ma?)

“Have you eaten?” The ultimate “I care about you” greeting. Use it around meal times: but skip it if you run into someone coming out of the restroom; do you know why?

2. 最近怎么样? (Zuìjìn zěnmeyàng?)

“How’s it going lately?” The most natural way to catch up with friends or colleagues you haven’t seen in a few days.

3. 忙什么呢? (Máng shénme ne?)

“What are you busy with?” A respectful way to acknowledge someone’s hard work. Perfect for checking in before you interrupt someone.`

4. 干嘛呢? (Gànmá ne?)

“What are you up to?” Super casual and punchy. This is the direct equivalent of “What’s up?” or “What are you doing?”, we also use this one for text messages.

5. 去哪儿啊? (Qù nǎr a?)

“Where are you headed?” The go-to greeting when you run into someone you know on the street or in a hallway.

6. 还没走啊? (Hái méi zǒu a?)

“You’re still here?” Commonly used in the office or at an event when you see someone still working or hanging around.

7. 下班了啊? (Xiàbān le a?)

“Finished work?” The standard greeting for colleagues or neighbours when you see them leaving the office or returning home. (It’s obviously, but just asking 😂 )

8. 挺好的吧? (Tǐng hǎo de ba?)

“Everything’s good, right?” A rhetorical way to check in. It’s warmer than a direct question and assumes the person is doing well.

9. 工作怎么样? (Gōngzuò zěnmeyàng!)

“How’s work going!” A great way to catch up with friends or former colleagues. It shows interest in their professional life and current projects.

10. 你怎么在这儿呢! (Nǐ zěnme zài zhèr ne!)

“What are you doing here!” The perfect “surprise” greeting when you run into a friend in an unexpected place. It shows excitement at seeing them.
